🚨 2020 Toyota Vitz: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Toyota Vitz hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter lever with a straight gate pattern and electronic park lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged if functional.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (press START button twice without brake pedal).
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, typically covered by a small rectangular cap.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no 12V power, with override pressed, apply force to move the shifter—it may require significant pressure.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely; ensure it is properly secured before releasing brakes.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will still mechanically release the shifter, but you will need to apply more force to move it. The ignition may need to be in ACC using the mechanical key slot (consult owner's manual for key slot location, typically behind a cover on the START button). The vehicle will roll freely in Neutral without power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
As a hybrid, the Vitz can be towed in Neutral for short distances at low speeds, but Toyota recommends flatbed towing for all hybrid vehicles to prevent damage to the hybrid transaxle and electric motor/generator systems. Never tow with drive wheels on the ground for extended distances.
