⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if any battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small rectangular or circular cover cap near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front of the center console shifter surround
  4. Use the metal key blade or a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry off the override cover
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key blade straight down into the override slot
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. Keep the override depressed until the shifter is completely engaged in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small cover cap located near the shifter base on the center console, commonly on the right side or front edge of the shifter surround - position may vary slightly by model year and trim
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override functions mechanically without electrical power. With a completely dead battery, manually unlock the door with the metal key blade. The override will release the shifter mechanically. Note that the steering lock may be engaged - you may need to turn the key to ACC while gently rocking the steering wheel to unlock it before the vehicle can be moved. Some models may require a jump start or external power to release the steering lock.
