🚨 2017 Vauxhall Astra: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Vauxhall Astra K features a console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and firmly apply the parking brake
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if the battery has any remaining charge
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small cover cap near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the right side or front edge of the shifter surround
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade to gently pry off the override cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the revealed override slot
  6. While holding the override tool down, simultaneously press the shifter release button and move the lever toward Neutral
  7. Keep the override depressed until the shifter fully engages in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small cap-covered slot located near the shifter base on the center console, commonly positioned to the right or front of the shifter - may vary slightly by interior trim level
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override mechanism is purely mechanical and functions without electrical power. With a completely dead battery, manually unlock the vehicle using the metal key blade in the driver's door. Once inside, the override slot allows mechanical release of the shifter. Note that the steering column lock will be engaged - you may need to insert the key and turn it to ACC while gently rocking the steering wheel to release the steering lock before the vehicle can roll.
