🚨 2018 Vauxhall Astra: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 Vauxhall Astra K utilizes a console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake securely
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if any battery power remains
  3. Locate the shift lock override - find the small rectangular or circular cover near the shifter base on the center console, usually to the right or front of the shifter assembly
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key blade straight down into the override slot
  6. While maintaining downward pressure on the override, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. Continue holding the override down until the shifter is completely in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small cover-protected slot near the base of the shifter on the center console, typically located to the right side or front of the shifter - position may vary with trim package
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override works mechanically without electrical power. With a fully dead battery, use the metal key to manually unlock the driver's door to access the interior. The override slot functions purely mechanically to release the shifter to Neutral. Be aware that the steering lock will be engaged - insert the key and turn to ACC while gently rocking the steering wheel side-to-side to unlock the steering column before attempting to move the vehicle.
