The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered access point near the base of the shifter, typically on the right side or front face of the shifter surround
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to remove the small plastic cover over the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park
- If successful, the shifter will release and you can move it to Neutral
- Keep the override pressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
