🚨 2020 Vauxhall Astra: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Astra uses a conventional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered access point near the base of the shifter, typically on the right side or front face of the shifter surround
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to remove the small plastic cover over the override slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park
  6. If successful, the shifter will release and you can move it to Neutral
  7. Keep the override pressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front of the center console shifter surround - look for a small rectangular or circular cover that can be pried out
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. You may need to manually unlock the steering column first by turning the key. The override does not require electrical power to release the shifter mechanism.
