🚨 2020 Volkswagen Amarok BR: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Amarok BR uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake pedal switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON/ACC position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small rectangular cap or cover on the left side of the shifter base near the console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot and press firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park.
  6. Move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle needs to roll, you may need to keep the override depressed or have the shifter held in Neutral position.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC, but the override release does not require electrical power. Access the override slot and apply pressure while shifting to Neutral. Steering wheel will remain locked.
