🚨 2024 Volkswagen Amarok BR: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Amarok BR (third generation, Ford Ranger-based platform) uses a console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake pedal switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. If battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON/ACC position using the push-button start (press without brake pedal).
  3. Locate the shift lock override: look for a small cap or slot near the shifter base on the console, typically on the left or forward side of the shifter.
  4. Remove the override cap using a flathead screwdriver or key blade.
  5. Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override depressed, pull the shifter button/release and move to Neutral.
  7. The shifter may need to be held in Neutral or the override kept engaged if the vehicle needs to roll.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. You cannot activate ignition accessories, but the override mechanism is purely mechanical. Access the override slot and maintain pressure while shifting to Neutral. Steering wheel will remain locked with no power.
