🚨 2026 Volkswagen Amarok BR: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Amarok BR uses a traditional electronic console-mounted shift lever with an integrated electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge remaining (ACC or ON)
  3. Locate the shift lock override - a small rectangular cap or slot typically found near the base of the shifter console, usually on the left or right side
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cap
  5. Press and hold the override button/tab firmly downward while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
  6. If no electrical power is available, press and hold the override while applying firm pressure to move the shifter - it may require significant force
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small cap near the shifter base on the console, typically to the left or right side of the shifter assembly - exact location may vary by trim
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the override release still functions mechanically but requires firm pressure to override the shift lock. The shifter will not illuminate and position indicators will be dark. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly while holding the override to release pressure on the parking pawl.
