🚨 2020 Volkswagen Atlas: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Atlas uses a traditional electronic console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift interlock and electronic parking brake.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and properly chocked
- If battery has any remaining charge, turn ignition to ON or ACC position
- Locate the shift lock override - a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to pry off the small rectangular override cap
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter forward from Park to Neutral
- If completely without power, maintain pressure on the override and apply firm forward pressure to the shifter - it will require more force but should move to Neutral
- Vehicle can now roll but note the electronic parking brake status (see power notes below)

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic parking brake (EPB) will remain engaged, locking the rear wheels even when the shifter is in Neutral. The shift lock override works mechanically, but the EPB requires power to release. You will need to either jump-start the 12V battery to release the EPB, or load the vehicle onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Do not attempt to tow with rear wheels down as the EPB cannot be released without power.
