🚨 2026 Volkswagen Atlas: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Atlas uses a console-mounted electronic shift-by-wire lever with a button on the side for park release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to ON/RUN position if battery has any charge (key pushed in without foot on brake, or START button pressed without brake).
- Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the front left corner of the console shifter housing.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has electrical power, you should now be able to shift; if not, see no-power notes below.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery and shift-by-wire system, the override alone may not release the shifter on this electronic system. Jump-start the 12V battery (under hood) even briefly to power the shift-by-wire module, then immediately use the override procedure. If jump-start is impossible, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with all wheels on dollies; consult VW service manual for transmission mechanical park release procedure (requires underbody access).
