🚨 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 e-Golf uses a console-mounted electronic shifter lever similar to conventional Golf models, but with an electronic park system controlled by the drive unit.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock all wheels.
  2. Press the START button without pressing the brake pedal to put the vehicle in Accessory or ON mode (if 12V battery has any charge).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, toward the front corner of the console shifter housing.
  4. Use the emergency key blade (stored in the key fob) or a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the cap.
  5. Insert the key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter toward Neutral.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely if parking brake is released.

With zero electrical power
The e-Golf's electronic shifter and electric parking brake both require 12V power. With a completely dead 12V battery, jump-start the battery (12V battery is under the hood on the right side) to provide power to the shifter system and electronic parking brake module. Even a brief jump will allow you to release the parking brake and shift to Neutral. Without any power, the mechanical override may not fully disengage the electronic park mechanism.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The e-Golf has no traditional transmission and the drive unit is always mechanically connected to the wheels when in Neutral. NEVER tow with driven wheels on the ground except for immediate short-distance movement onto a flatbed. Towing with wheels down will spin the motor and generate voltage that can damage the high-voltage system even with the vehicle 'off.' Always use a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground or wheel dollies. Before towing, consult the manual for activating transport mode if the 12V system can be powered.
