⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button twice without brake pedal) to provide power to the shift lock system
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V battery or connect a portable jump pack to provide power to the shift lock solenoid
- With power available, press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock release button (small rectangular button on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position) with a small tool or key while pulling the shifter out of Park
- Shift to Neutral
- If the vehicle must be towed, place the drive selector in Neutral and ensure the ignition is in ON or Accessory mode to unlock the steering - refer to owner's manual for proper tow mode procedure

With zero electrical power
The e-Golf requires 12V power to release the shift lock. You must jump-start the 12V auxiliary battery (located in the engine bay) or connect a portable jump starter to provide power before the shifter can be moved. Without any power, the shifter will remain locked in Park.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The e-Golf must be flatbed towed only. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground as the electric motor is directly connected to the drivetrain and towing with wheels down will generate electricity that can damage the high-voltage system and create a fire hazard. Even in Neutral, the e-Golf should not be towed except on a flatbed.
