🚨 2008 Volkswagen Eos: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 Eos uses a console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with mechanical shift lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Insert the key and turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if battery has any charge
  3. Locate the shift lock release cover - a small rectangular or circular cap on the shifter console, typically to the left or front of the shifter lever near the P position
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the shift lock release slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the release down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. If the battery is completely dead and steering is locked, you may need to slightly rock the steering wheel while turning the key to unlock it before shifting
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular or circular cap near the shifter base, typically on the left side or forward of the shifter lever adjacent to Park position - pry off to access the mechanical release slot underneath
With zero electrical power
The 2008 Eos has a mechanical shift lock override that works without battery power. After removing the shift lock release cover, press the mechanical release and shift to Neutral. The steering lock may still be engaged without power - you may need to manually turn the key while slightly moving the steering wheel to unlock it for towing.
