🚨 1996 Volkswagen Golf: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 Golf automatic uses a console-mounted shifter with a simple mechanical shift lock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Insert the key and turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if battery has any charge (this may help unlock the steering)
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular or square cover/slot near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or front of the shifter assembly near Park
  4. If there is a cover, carefully pry it off with a small flathead screwdriver or the key
  5. Insert a screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the shift lock release opening and press down firmly on the mechanical release
  6. While holding the release mechanism down, move the shifter out of Park into Neutral
  7. Keep the vehicle in Neutral and ensure the parking brake is set before any towing operations
Shift-lock override location
Look for a small cover or access slot near the shifter base on the left side or front edge near the Park position - the exact location may vary, but it should be visible once you examine the shifter console closely
With zero electrical power
The 1996 Golf uses a mechanical shift lock system that can be overridden without battery power. The mechanical release works by physically pressing down a lever that disengages the shift lock. If the steering is locked and the battery is dead, you may need to manually turn the key while slightly moving the steering wheel back and forth to unlock the steering column.
