⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (or ACC if battery is weak but not completely dead)
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override slot - it is on the left side of the shifter base, just forward of the shifter boot, usually covered by a small plastic cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small cap covering the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot (approximately 1 inch deep)
- While holding the shift button on the shifter handle AND pressing down firmly on the override slot, move the shifter to Neutral
- Remove the tool from the override slot and replace the cap

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot becomes critical. You will need to manually depress the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral. The ignition does not need to be on for the mechanical override to work, but you must use physical force on both the override and shifter button together. Some resistance is normal.
