🚨 2000 Volkswagen Golf: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 Golf (Mk4 generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a thumb button on the front of the handle and an electronic shift interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (or ACC if battery is weak but not completely dead)
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - it is a small rectangular slot on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter boot meets the console, covered by a small plastic cap
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the plastic cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot (about 1 inch deep) until you feel the release mechanism
  6. Press the shifter thumb button AND push down firmly on the tool in the override slot simultaneously
  7. While maintaining pressure on both, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. Remove the tool and replace the cap

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the mechanical override is your only option. No ignition position is required for the override to work - it's a purely mechanical release. You must apply firm downward pressure into the override slot while simultaneously pressing the shifter button. The mechanism may feel stiff, requiring significant force. If the steering lock is engaged with zero power, you may need to jump the battery momentarily just to unlock steering for towing.
