🚨 2003 Volkswagen Golf: Emergency Neutral
The 2003 Golf with automatic transmission uses a traditional PRNDL console-mounted shifter with an electronic shift-lock interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the 'ON' position (do not need to start the engine, just need accessory power)
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a removable plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base near the P position
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or coin
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the tool down, press the shifter button and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Remove the tool and replace the cap

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you cannot use the electronic shift-lock override as it requires ignition power. You will need to jump-start the 12V battery (even briefly) to get accessory power, then follow the override procedure. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels on dollies or the rear wheels on the bed (FWD vehicle).
