🚨 2001 Volkswagen GTI: Emergency Neutral
The 2001 GTI did not offer a DCT transmission; it came with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission, both using traditional shifters.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- If this is a manual transmission: the vehicle has no shift-lock and can be shifted to neutral at any time by simply moving the shifter to the center neutral position (no clutch needed when engine is off)
- If this is an automatic transmission: turn the ignition key to the 'ON' position to provide accessory power
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the left side of the shifter console base, near the Park position, under a small removable plastic cap
- Remove the cap and insert a flat-blade screwdriver or key into the slot
- Press down firmly on the tool while pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
For automatic: left side of shifter console base near Park position. For manual: no override needed, shift freely to neutral.
With zero electrical power
Manual transmission: no power needed, simply shift to neutral. Automatic transmission: requires ignition accessory power for the shift-lock override. If battery is completely dead, jump-start the battery briefly or load the vehicle onto a flatbed with appropriate wheel positioning for a FWD vehicle.
