⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge (accessories on, engine does not need to start)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift-lock button on the front of the shifter lever while simultaneously pulling the lever back from P to N
- If the shift-lock button does not release with no power, locate the small circular shift-lock override cap on the left side of the shifter base near the P position
- Pry off the override cap using a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or small tool into the override slot and push down while moving the shifter to N
- Keep the shifter in N and do not turn off the ignition until the vehicle is secured
Shift-lock override location
Small circular cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position gate; access requires removing the cap with a flat tool
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock will be engaged. Use the mechanical shift-lock override slot (remove the cap on the left side of shifter base). You will need to insert a tool and push down to release the lock mechanism while moving the shifter. The ignition does not need to be on for the mechanical override to work.
