🚨 2006-2009 Volkswagen GTI: Emergency Neutral

The 2006-2009 Mk5 GTI with DSG uses a console-mounted lever with a shift-lock release button integrated into the front of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge (accessories on, engine does not need to start)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shift-lock release button on the front of the shifter handle and move the lever back from P to N
  5. If the electronic shift-lock does not release due to power failure, locate the shift-lock override slot
  6. Remove the small rectangular trim panel on the left side of the shifter base (forward of the shifter, driver's side of the console)
  7. Insert a screwdriver, key, or small tool into the exposed slot and push down firmly
  8. While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N
  9. Keep the shifter in N; do not turn off the ignition if the vehicle is running
Shift-lock override location
Behind a small rectangular trim panel on the left (driver's) side of the shifter base, forward of the shifter lever; the panel pries out and reveals the mechanical override slot
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift-lock will be engaged and the shifter button will not function. Use the mechanical override: remove the small trim panel on the driver's side of the shifter base and insert a tool into the slot, pushing down while moving the shifter. The ignition position does not matter for mechanical override operation.
