⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not need to start the engine, but need electrical power for the shift lock solenoid)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the button on the side of the shift lever and move from Park to Neutral
- If the brake-light switch has failed and the shift lock won't release with the brake pedal, locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover to the left of the shifter base (driver's side)
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the override cover
- With ignition ON, insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, turn ignition OFF and remove the key (shifter will remain in Neutral)

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery and no power, the DSG shift lock cannot be electrically released. You must jump-start the 12V battery or connect a portable jump pack to get enough power to turn ignition ON and activate the override procedure. The override slot requires ignition power to function. If jumping is impossible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels on dollies while in Park.
