🚨 2023 Volkswagen GTI: Emergency Neutral

The Mk8 GTI uses a compact console-mounted lever shifter with electronic shift lock and revised interior layout.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Attempt to turn ignition to ON position if any battery power remains (press START button without brake pedal)
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small cover or slot on the left side of the shifter base near the console
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to remove the override cover if present
  5. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move to Neutral
  7. Replace the cover if removed
Shift-lock override location
Check left side of shifter base near the console trim - exact location may vary slightly from Mk7.5 due to revised interior design
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, use the mechanical shift lock override. The override works without electrical power. If the transmission park pawl is under load, you may need to rock the vehicle slightly to relieve pressure before the shifter will release.
