🚨 2021 Volkswagen ID.4: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 ID.4 uses a small column-mounted monostable shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column that returns to center after each gear selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is applied (if functional).
- If 12V power is available, press the start button WITHOUT pressing the brake pedal to turn on the ignition - this powers the shift-by-wire system without activating the drive system.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Push the shifter stalk forward momentarily to select 'N' (Neutral) - the stalk will spring back to center, and 'N' should appear on the instrument cluster.
- If the shifter will not move due to a failed shift-lock, locate the small circular cap at the base of the shifter stalk assembly where it meets the steering column (right side).
- Pry off the cap carefully with a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert the tip of a small screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the revealed hole and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and push the shifter stalk forward to 'N'.
- Verify 'N' is displayed on the instrument cluster before attempting to move the vehicle.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be carefully pushed or winched onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With NO 12V power, the shift-by-wire system is completely inoperable - you CANNOT shift into Neutral. The electric motor remains mechanically engaged. You must either jump-start the 12V battery to restore power and then shift to Neutral, or load the vehicle onto a flatbed with ALL FOUR WHEELS off the ground. Do not attempt to tow with wheels touching the ground without power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL EV WARNING: The ID.4 is a battery-electric vehicle with a permanently-engaged single-speed transmission. Without electrical power and Neutral selected, the drive motor is mechanically locked to the wheels. Towing or dragging the vehicle with any wheels on the ground while NOT in Neutral will cause catastrophic damage to the motor and drivetrain. ALWAYS use a flatbed with all wheels off the ground if you cannot restore 12V power. Even with Neutral engaged, extended towing is not recommended - flatbed transport is always preferred for EVs.
