🚨 2024 Volkswagen ID.4: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 ID.4 uses a small column-mounted drive selector stalk on the right side of the steering column (similar to a turn signal stalk but shorter).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and wheel chocks are in place.
  2. Access the 12V battery in the front under the hood (it's a small auxiliary battery, not the main traction battery).
  3. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you'll need to jump-start it or connect an external 12V power source to the jump-start terminals under the hood to restore minimal electrical function.
  4. Once 12V power is restored, press the brake pedal and press the power button to put the vehicle into accessory or ready mode.
  5. Pull the drive selector stalk toward you once to select Neutral (N).
  6. If the shift interlock is preventing engagement despite power, locate the small shift lock override - on the column near the base of the selector stalk, there may be a small release slot or button (typically requires a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to depress).
  7. With Neutral engaged, the vehicle can be moved short distances at low speed.
Shift-lock override location
Small release mechanism near the base of the column-mounted drive selector stalk; exact location may require inspection as it's a small access point, typically covered by trim or requiring tool insertion.
With zero electrical power
With absolutely no 12V power, the drive selector will not function and the electronic parking brake cannot be released electrically. You must jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external 12V source to the jump-start posts under the hood. Once minimal power is restored, you can select Neutral and manually release the EPB via the center console switch (pull and hold).
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: ID.4 is electric-only. The main traction battery remains energized even when the vehicle is off. For flatbed towing, all four wheels must be OFF the ground or use a wheel dolly for the drive wheels. DO NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground for any distance - this will cause severe damage to the electric drive system. Neutral is only for short-distance movement (onto a flatbed) at very low speeds (under 3-5 mph). Consult the owner's manual towing section for the maximum rollback distance allowed in Neutral.
