🚨 2026 Volkswagen ID.4: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and wheel chocks are in place.
- Access the 12V battery under the front hood (auxiliary battery).
- If the 12V battery is dead, jump-start it or connect an external 12V power source to the jump-start terminals under the hood.
- Once 12V power is restored, press the brake pedal and press the power button to activate accessory or ready mode.
- Pull the drive selector stalk toward you once to engage Neutral (N).
- If shift interlock prevents Neutral selection, locate the shift lock override near the base of the column selector stalk (small access point, may require a small tool).
- With Neutral selected, the vehicle can be moved short distances at very low speed.

With zero electrical power
Without 12V power, the drive selector will not function and the electronic parking brake cannot be released. Jump-start the 12V battery via the under-hood terminals. Once power is available, select Neutral and release the EPB using the center console switch (pull and hold).

CRITICAL: ID.4 is electric-only. For towing, all four wheels must be OFF the ground or use wheel dollies for drive wheels. DO NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground at any distance - severe electric drive damage will occur. Neutral is for short, low-speed movement only (onto a flatbed, under 3-5 mph). Check owner's manual for maximum rollback distance.
