🚨 2024 Volkswagen ID.Buzz: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 ID.Buzz uses Volkswagen's electronic drive selector stalk mounted on the right side of the steering column, consistent with the MEB platform architecture.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chocked if possible
  2. With 12V power available, press and hold the brake pedal and press the start button to turn on the vehicle (ready mode)
  3. Move the drive selector stalk to N (neutral) by pushing it up once from the P position
  4. If the vehicle has 12V power but won't shift due to brake switch failure, locate the shift lock override—it should be under a small cap near the base of the center console area below the drive selector
  5. Pry off the override cap with a flat-blade tool, insert a key or screwdriver into the release slot, press down while moving the selector stalk to N
  6. To engage transport mode for flatbed loading: with vehicle on, shift to N, then press and hold the drive selector in the N position for approximately 3 seconds until the instrument cluster displays 'Transport Mode' or similar confirmation
Shift-lock override location
Small cover cap in the center console area near the drive selector stalk base; exact location may vary but typically found in the lower console trim
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the ID.Buzz cannot shift or release its electronic parking brake. The 12V battery is located under the hood. You must jump-start the 12V system or connect a portable jump starter to restore minimal electrical function. Once 12V power is restored, you can release the parking brake through the center console switch (pull and hold) and shift to neutral.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The ID.Buzz has an electronic parking brake that cannot be released without 12V power. Even in neutral, the parking brake will hold the vehicle. Transport mode MUST be activated before any movement to prevent drive system damage. FLATBED ONLY—do not tow with any wheels on the ground. If the 12V battery is completely dead and cannot be jump-started, the vehicle must be winched onto the flatbed with parking brake engaged.
