The 2025 Jetta GLI uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (press the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal, or turn the key to ON).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- If the shifter still won't move, locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the front.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the key blade or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- Keep your foot on the brake pedal throughout this process.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter lock will remain engaged. You must jump-start the vehicle or connect a battery maintainer to provide at least minimal 12V power to release the shift lock mechanism. The override slot requires some electrical power to function properly. If no power source is available, the vehicle will need to be lifted/dollied onto a flatbed with the transmission locked in Park.
