🚨 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Jetta GLI uses an electronic console-mounted shift-by-wire lever with a traditional P-R-N-D-S/M gate pattern.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheels are chocked if parking brake is inoperative).
- Turn the ignition to ON/RUN position if possible (requires some 12V power). If battery is completely dead, see noPower notes below.
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is typically a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the shifter assembly).
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the vehicle's key/tool to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter from Park.
- Move the shifter to Neutral.
- The vehicle can now be pushed or rolled onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter will NOT function normally. The shift-lock override will mechanically release the shifter, but the transmission may not physically shift into Neutral without at least minimal 12V power to energize the solenoid. If absolutely no power is available, attempt the override procedure; if the transmission remains locked in Park, the vehicle MUST be flatbedded with all four wheels off the ground or dollies under the drive wheels. Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground. Consider jump-starting or connecting an external 12V source to allow the shifter to electronically engage Neutral.
