🚨 1995 Volkswagen Jetta GLX: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 Jetta GLX uses a traditional cable-actuated console-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift-lock solenoid (P-R-N-D-3-2-1 or P-R-N-D-3-2 pattern depending on transmission).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheels are chocked).
  2. Turn the ignition key to ON (or ACC if battery is weak) if any 12V power is available.
  3. Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal to release the shift-lock solenoid (if power is available).
  4. If the shifter does not release, locate the shift-lock override: there is a small plastic cap or slot on the front-left side of the shifter base (toward the driver, near the shifter button).
  5. Pry off the cap with a flathead screwdriver.
  6. Insert the screwdriver into the slot and press/push the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and pulling the lever out of Park.
  7. Move the shifter to Neutral.
  8. The vehicle can now be pushed or rolled.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap/slot on the front-left side of the shifter base, near the shifter release button; may be integrated into the shifter surround trim.
With zero electrical power
The Mk3 Jetta's shift-lock is a simple 12V solenoid and mechanical cable system. With zero power, the override slot will mechanically release the shifter lock pin, allowing the shifter to move freely. The transmission itself is cable-actuated and does NOT require power to physically shift into Neutral once the shifter lock is defeated. The override is fully mechanical and reliable with no power.
