🚨 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GLX: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 Jetta GLX uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake pedal switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine) to provide power to the shift lock solenoid
  3. Locate the small rectangular shift lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, just forward of the shift boot
  4. Remove the small plastic cover cap by prying gently with a flat screwdriver or your fingernail
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool approximately 1/2 inch into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the ignition cannot provide power, use a 9V battery or jump pack connected to the battery terminals to provide minimal power for the override to function

With zero electrical power
The shift lock mechanism requires at least minimal electrical power to release. With absolutely no power, connect a 9V battery or portable jump starter to the battery terminals (positive to positive, negative to negative) to provide enough current for the shift lock solenoid. Alternatively, the transmission can be placed in neutral by accessing the shift linkage under the vehicle, but this requires lifting the car and mechanical knowledge.
