The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine) to provide power to the shift lock solenoid
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, just forward of the shift boot
- Remove the small plastic cover cap by prying gently with a flat screwdriver or your fingernail
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool approximately 1/2 inch into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the ignition cannot provide power, use a 9V battery or jump pack connected to the battery terminals to provide minimal power for the override to function
