🚨 2015 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 Jetta Hybrid uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock and hybrid-specific shift logic integrated with the high-voltage system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON/RUN mode using the start button (press without brake pedal, may require multiple presses to cycle to ON)
  3. Locate the shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console trim
  4. Pry up the small rectangular plastic cover carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. For hybrid system: If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must provide power to the vehicle electrical system before the shift lock will release

With zero electrical power
The Jetta Hybrid shift lock absolutely requires 12V power to function. With a completely dead 12V battery, you must jump start the vehicle or connect an external power source to the 12V battery terminals before the shift lock override will work. The high-voltage hybrid battery does not help with shift lock release. Once minimal 12V power is restored, use the override procedure above.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Jetta Hybrid should NOT be towed with drive wheels on the ground for any distance. The electric motor is mechanically connected to the transmission and drive wheels will spin the motor, potentially generating voltage into the high-voltage system with unpredictable results. The hybrid system also has parking pawl engagement logic that may prevent rolling even in Neutral if systems are not properly initialized. FLATBED TOW ONLY. Before loading, place the transmission in Neutral using the override procedure, then ensure the parking brake is released.
