🚨 1992 Volkswagen Jetta: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Jetta uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a push-button release on the front of the shifter handle for automatic transmissions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheels are chocked if parking brake is inoperative)
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (this powers the shift interlock solenoid; if battery is completely dead, see noPowerNotes below)
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Press the button on the front of the shifter handle and move to Neutral
  5. If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override slot in the center console
  6. Remove the small plastic cover panel or trim piece near the base of the shifter (typically on the right side of the shifter base or in the center console trim)
  7. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key into the override slot and press down while holding the brake and pressing the shifter button
  8. Move the shifter to Neutral, then remove the tool from the override slot
Shift-lock override location
Small access slot typically located on the right side of the shifter base assembly, under a removable trim cover in the center console near the shifter boot
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery (no ignition power), the shift interlock cannot be electrically released. You must use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the trim cover near the shifter base, locate the override release slot, insert a screwdriver or key, and press down to mechanically release the lock while attempting to shift to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle can only be pushed or towed with the front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
