🚨 1995 Volkswagen Jetta: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 Jetta (A3 platform, third generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a push-button release on the front of the shifter handle for automatic transmissions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheels are chocked if parking brake is inoperative)
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (this powers the shift interlock solenoid; if battery is completely dead, see noPowerNotes below)
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Press the button on the front of the shifter handle and move to Neutral
  5. If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override access in the center console
  6. Look for a small removable trim panel or cap on the right side of the shifter base in the console
  7. Remove the cover to reveal the mechanical shift lock release slot
  8. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the slot and press down firmly
  9. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move to Neutral
  10. Remove the tool and replace the access cover
Shift-lock override location
Located on the right side of the shifter base assembly, under a small removable plastic cover in the center console trim adjacent to the shifter boot
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery (no ignition power), you must use the mechanical shift lock override. Remove the trim cover on the right side of the shifter base, insert a screwdriver into the override slot, and press down to mechanically disengage the shift lock while moving the shifter to Neutral. The steering column will remain locked, making the vehicle difficult to steer. Flatbed towing is strongly recommended; if pushing/dollying, front wheels must be off the ground.
