The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- If the battery is functional, turn the ignition to the ON position.
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small cover or slot near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the left side or front of the shifter assembly.
- Remove the cover if present (it may be a small rubber plug or plastic cap).
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot.
