🚨 2006 Volkswagen Rabbit: Emergency Neutral

The 2006 Rabbit (fifth-generation Golf/Jetta platform) uses a traditional console-mounted P-R-N-D shifter with a mechanical shift lock solenoid and manual override.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if 12V power is available (if only the brake switch has failed, this may release the shift lock)
  3. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override — it is a small square or rectangular slot covered by a plastic cap, located directly to the right of the shifter lever base in the console trim
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the lever from Park to Neutral
  7. Release the override and remove the screwdriver; the vehicle can now be pushed or winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot energize the ignition. The mechanical shift lock override still works: remove the small cap to the right of the shifter base, insert a screwdriver or key, press down into the override slot, and shift to Neutral. The steering column will remain locked, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels off the ground or towed appropriately.
