🚨 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Tiguan eHybrid uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire system, electronic parking brake, and hybrid powertrain controls.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the electronic parking brake is engaged
  2. Verify the high-voltage system is OFF (no READY indicator)
  3. If battery has minimal charge, turn ignition to ON position (do not press brake to enter READY mode)
  4. Locate the shift lock override - a small rectangular cover at the left front base of the shifter assembly
  5. Use the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the override cover
  6. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override mechanism down, press the brake pedal and attempt to shift to Neutral
  8. If the 12V battery has sufficient charge, the hybrid system may enter a transport mode allowing neutral selection

With zero electrical power
The eHybrid uses shift-by-wire technology and requires 12V power to the transmission and hybrid control modules. With completely dead 12V battery, the mechanical shift lock override will not successfully engage the transmission into neutral. The transmission ECU needs power to command the gear change. Jump-starting the 12V battery is essential before attempting to shift. If jump-starting is not possible, flatbed transport is mandatory.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE - FLATBED TRANSPORT REQUIRED: The Tiguan eHybrid has an electric motor integrated into the drivetrain. Even in Neutral with the high-voltage system off, towing with wheels on the ground can generate voltage in the electric motor and damage the hybrid system components. The vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. Do NOT tow with any wheels touching the ground under any circumstances. Ensure the high-voltage system is completely powered down before transport.
