🚨 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 Tiguan uses a monostable electronic shifter (spring-returns to center) located on the center console with P-R-N-D positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/accessory mode (push start button without brake pedal, or turn key to ON).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is under a small removable cap on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of shifter assembly).
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small rectangular cap.
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to N (neutral) position.
  7. If brake pedal is non-functional, continue holding override and rock shifter through gate to N.
  8. Release the override tool once shifter is in N; verify shifter indicator shows N if display is functional.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic monostable shifter cannot be released using normal methods. The mechanical override requires at least accessory power to unlock the transmission. If completely dead, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground or dolly the front wheels—do NOT tow with rear wheels down as the transmission will not be in neutral mechanically.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The 2022 Tiguan is available as a hybrid (eHybrid). If this is the eHybrid model, do NOT attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground—the electric drive system can be damaged. Use only flatbed or trailer transport with all wheels off the ground. Consult the hybrid emergency response guide if high-voltage system exposure is suspected.
