The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override—look for a small removable cap or slot near the shifter base on the center console, commonly positioned to the right or forward of the shifter
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
