🚨 1990 Volvo 740: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Volvo 740 uses a column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock mechanism similar to the 240 series.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the steering column shroud, near where the shift lever enters the column housing
  4. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot (approximately 1/4 inch deep)
  5. While pressing the override with the screwdriver, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
  6. If successful, the vehicle can now roll freely
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the steering column shroud near the shift lever base, accessible with a small screwdriver; may have a small removable plastic cap
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override should still function. The shift lock mechanism is mechanically linked to the brake pedal switch, and the override bypasses this entirely. No electrical power is required to use the manual override release.
