🚨 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 C40 Recharge uses a center-console monostable shifter that returns to center position after each gear selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button without brake pedal twice to reach ON mode)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- If the shifter will not move out of Park, locate the shift lock override cover on the center console—it is a small rectangular cap near the base of the shifter assembly on the right side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
- If you need to manually push the vehicle, keep the ignition in ON mode to unlock the steering wheel and keep transmission in Neutral
- For towing: activate Transport Mode through the center screen (Settings > My Car > Transport Mode) if the vehicle has 12V power, which mechanically locks the powertrain for safe towing

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the monostable shifter and shift lock will not function. You cannot engage Neutral electronically. Jump-start the 12V battery (located under hood) to restore accessory power, then follow the normal override procedure. The high-voltage battery being depleted does not prevent 12V operation.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The C40 Recharge is a fully electric vehicle. Never flat-tow this vehicle with drive wheels on the ground—permanent drivetrain damage will occur. Always use a flatbed or trailer with all four wheels off the ground. If Transport Mode cannot be activated due to complete electrical failure, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with extreme care as the parking pawl will be engaged.
