🚨 2010 Volvo C70: Emergency Neutral

Second-generation C70 (2006-2013) uses a center console-mounted lever shifter with electronic shift lock and more integrated styling than the first generation.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn ignition to position II (ON) if battery has any charge
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular or circular cover near the base of the shifter console, typically on the driver's side
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover
  5. Insert a screwdriver into the exposed slot and press down on the mechanical release
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. If successful, prepare vehicle for towing in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small cover near the base of the shifter console on the driver's side - check immediately adjacent to shifter base trim
With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override does not require battery power. With a completely dead battery, use the override procedure with the cover removed and mechanical release depressed. The shifter can be moved to Neutral mechanically even without ignition power.
