⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition to position II (ON) if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular or circular cover near the base of the shifter console, typically on the driver's side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover
- Insert a screwdriver into the exposed slot and press down on the mechanical release
- While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to Neutral
- If successful, prepare vehicle for towing in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small cover near the base of the shifter console on the driver's side - check immediately adjacent to shifter base trim
With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override does not require battery power. With a completely dead battery, use the override procedure with the cover removed and mechanical release depressed. The shifter can be moved to Neutral mechanically even without ignition power.
