🚨 2012 Volvo C70: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 C70 uses a traditional console-mounted PRNDL lever shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to position I or II if battery power is available (this may allow normal shifting if only the brake switch failed)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot, which is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the driver's side of the shifter base, near the left side of the shifter boot
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key firmly into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward toward Neutral
  6. Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
  7. The vehicle can now be rolled or towed with all four wheels on the ground at low speed for short distances

With zero electrical power
With no battery power, the shift lock override must be used. The ignition will not turn on, so use only the mechanical override method. You may need a flashlight to locate the override slot.
