🚨 2020 Volvo S60 Recharge: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 S60 Recharge (plug-in hybrid) uses an electronic console-mounted shifter lever, part of the SPA platform design.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional
- Attempt to start the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal and pushing the start button—the hybrid system should power up
- If the vehicle powers on, press and hold the brake pedal firmly and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shift interlock will not release (failed brake-light switch or interlock solenoid), locate the shift lock override
- Look for a small rectangular or circular cover on the center console directly adjacent to the shifter base, usually to the right or forward of the lever
- Pry off or slide the cover, insert a small screwdriver or key blade into the slot, and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral
- If the 12V battery is dead, jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V source—minimal power is needed for the shifter electronics to function
Shift-lock override location
Small cover on the center console next to the shifter base, typically to the right side of the lever—remove cover to access override slot
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shifter electronics will not function. Jump-start the vehicle or connect a booster pack to provide power. Once power is available, use the override if the interlock still does not release. The high-voltage hybrid battery does not help here—12V power is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The S60 Recharge is a plug-in hybrid with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. If being towed, ensure the vehicle is in Neutral and the hybrid system is aware (instrument cluster should confirm Neutral). For long-distance towing or if Neutral cannot be engaged, use a flatbed or tow dolly with the front wheels off the ground to avoid damaging the hybrid drivetrain.
