🚨 2020 Volvo S90 Recharge: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 S90 Recharge (T8 Twin Engine) uses Volvo's monostable electronic shifter that returns to center, with electronic Park lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if operational.
- Press the START button without the brake pedal to turn the ignition to accessory mode.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Push the shifter forward from Park to select Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base.
- Carefully pry off or remove the small rubber cap covering the override access.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key into the slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter forward to Neutral.
- If possible, keep the ignition ON to maintain power steering and electronic brake assist.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shifter and all vehicle electronics are inoperable. Jump-start the 12V battery (located in the trunk, right side) to restore accessory power. Once power is available, use the shift lock override to release the transmission into Neutral. Without any 12V power, mechanical release may not be possible and flatbed towing with dollies is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The S90 Recharge is a plug-in hybrid with a rear-mounted electric motor. NEVER flat-tow or tow with the rear wheels on the ground—this will cause catastrophic damage to the electric drive unit and transmission. Always use flatbed towing or a wheel-lift tow truck with the rear axle raised. If 12V power is available, shift to Neutral and release the parking brake before towing to prevent additional damage.
