The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press START without brake pedal twice) to power the shift-lock system
- Locate the small rectangular shift-lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, below the selector lever
- Remove the small plastic cover cap by prying gently with a flat tool
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the override slot
- While pressing the override down firmly, press the shift-lock button on the shifter knob and move the lever to Neutral
- If successful, the gear indicator will show N on the instrument cluster

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function and the override will not work. You must jump-start the 12V battery (located in the cargo area under the floor panel on the right side) to restore power to the shift-lock system before attempting to shift. The high-voltage battery on hybrid/PHEV variants does not help with this 12V system issue.
