🚨 2026 Volvo S90: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 S90 uses Volvo's monostable electronic shifter that returns to center after each input, with electronic Park engagement.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button without brake pedal, or use physical key if available).
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Move the shifter to Neutral position (push forward from Park or pull back from Drive/Reverse).
  5. If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override: remove the small rubber cap on the left side of the shifter base near the center console.
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter to Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved; keep ignition ON if possible to maintain steering and brake assist.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function and the override may not release the transmission. Jump-start the 12V battery to gain minimal power, turn ignition ON, then use the override procedure. If jump-starting is impossible, the vehicle must be lifted/dollied for towing—do not attempt to force the shifter.
