🚨 2025 Volvo XC40 Recharge: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 XC40 Recharge uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift-by-wire control and a shift lock button on the shifter itself.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- If the 12V battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON position (press START button without brake pedal twice).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shift lock release button on the right side of the shifter lever (the small button below the main shifter button) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If there is no electrical power at all, locate the shift lock override access—look for a small rectangular cover or slot near the base of the shifter console on the right side.
- Remove the cover using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while attempting to move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release or the high-voltage system does not respond, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover near the right side of the shifter base on the center console; exact position may vary but is typically adjacent to the shifter mechanism.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override slot near the shifter base. The high-voltage hybrid system will not engage, so normal driving is impossible. The mechanical override only releases the shifter lock—you cannot shift the actual transmission without some 12V power to energize the solenoids.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The XC40 Recharge is a plug-in hybrid with both electric motors and a gasoline engine. If the high-voltage system is damaged or the vehicle cannot enter a safe tow mode, DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground. The electric motors are connected to the drivetrain and will generate voltage if the wheels rotate, potentially causing severe damage or creating a fire hazard. Always use a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground unless you can verify the vehicle is in proper neutral/tow mode with the hybrid system powered down safely.
