🚨 2026 Volvo XC40 Recharge: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 XC40 Recharge uses a center console monostable shifter lever that returns to center position after each shift command.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if possible
- If 12V power is available: turn the ignition to ON mode (press START without brake pedal, or use emergency 12V jump access)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the monostable shifter rearward (toward N position) and hold momentarily until the instrument cluster confirms Neutral
- If the shifter will not release from Park: locate the small circular shift lock override cap on the right side of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter rearward to Neutral
- Verify Neutral is engaged on the instrument cluster display before attempting to move the vehicle

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function. You must access the 12V jump-start terminal in the engine bay (positive terminal under red cap, negative ground point) and supply external power to energize the shift-by-wire system, then use the override procedure. The monostable shifter requires electrical power to command the transmission into Neutral.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a plug-in hybrid with electric drive capability. The high-voltage battery remains live even with 12V power disconnected. When towing, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground as the electric motors are directly coupled to the drivetrain and will generate dangerous voltages and cause severe damage. If available power allows, activate Tow Mode in the vehicle settings before transport.
