🚨 2010 Volvo XC60: Emergency Neutral

The 2010 XC60 (first generation) uses a traditional center console gear lever with a shift lock button on the side.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional
  2. If 12V power is available: turn the ignition to position II (full ON without starting engine)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shift lock button on the left side of the shifter and move the lever to Neutral
  5. If the shifter will not release from Park due to failed shift interlock: locate the shift lock override slot
  6. The override is accessed by removing the small rectangular trim panel on the left side of the shifter base (near the console)
  7. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry the panel off gently
  8. Insert the screwdriver into the exposed slot and press down while pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral
  9. Keep the brake pedal pressed during this procedure

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift interlock solenoid should default to unlocked on this generation. Try pressing the shift lock button and moving to Neutral without power. If this fails, use the mechanical override described above. The mechanical override works without electrical power.
