🚨 2023 Volvo XC90 Recharge: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON (press START without brake pedal).
- Locate the shift lock override: a small rectangular cover/cap on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover.
- Insert the key or a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no 12V power is available, you must jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external 12V power source to access the shift lock override function - the override mechanism requires some electrical function to release.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
The XC90 Recharge requires at least minimal 12V power to release the shift lock even when using the manual override. Jump-start the 12V battery (located in the cargo area under the floor) or use a portable jump pack connected to the jump-start terminals under the hood before attempting to shift. If completely impossible, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with wheels free-rolling.

CRITICAL: This is a plug-in hybrid with a high-voltage battery system. If the hybrid system is damaged or the vehicle has been in a collision, DO NOT attempt to move it yourself. The XC90 Recharge can typically be flat-towed on a flatbed with all wheels on the ground once in Neutral, but verify the high-voltage system is safe first. If the 12V system is dead, the hybrid system cannot engage, making flatbed transport the safest option. Consult the owner's manual or Volvo roadside assistance for hybrid-specific towing procedures.
